The Fighting Temeraire by J M W Turner is not a work of sentimental nostalgia but a memorial to the ship that performed better than any other in a battle which turned the tide of a European war in Britain's favour.  It also reverberates to the present day as a symbol of muddled British identity.  My essay on her appears this week at:
